The only thing between you and your coffee is the filter basket. So, it's important to look after it! Although there are many different types and different coffee filter basket sizes, they all do the same job; stand up to 20-30 pounds of water pressure, optimising your espresso extractions. If your coffee machine isn’t brewing coffee as you like it, it may well be that the coffee maker filter basket that comes as standard is not up to the job. Never fear. No need for a new machine. Simply swap out the existing espresso machine filter basket. Pressurised baskets have a standard mesh base and another 'wall' with only one small hole, creating a greater pressure within the basket. These come as standard with most entry-level home espresso machines where a less precise grind is acceptable but are not used in a commercial setting. Non-pressurised baskets are the original style of basket. And single wall filters allow greater control of each extraction. To achieve the best results, you need a finer grind of coffee and tamping also plays a much more important role in the extraction. Whilst this means more work for you, if your machine allows for a non-pressurised replacement, try it. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results. For obvious reasons, this option is favourite with coffee enthusiasts and professional baristas. Blind filter baskets have no holes in them, blocking water flow and back-flushing the espresso machine for cleaning.
