A kettle works by heating an element which in turn boils the water. A coffee kettle will have temperature controls and often a gooseneck spout, all of which is designed so you get the perfect pour at the optimum temperature for your brew. Read our Pour Over Coffee Kettles Guide for more info.

Here’s how to clean an electric kettle:

  1. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar.
  2. Fill your kettle 1/2 to 3/4 full.
  3. Plug the kettle in and bring to the boil.
  4. Unplug or turn off, and leave to sit for 15-20 mins.
  5. Empty the vinegar mixture and rinse thoroughly.

Here’s how to descale a kettle:

  1. Mix the descaler with water as instructed.
  2. Add water and descaler to the kettle.
  3. Leave to sit for around 10 mins, or as long as the descaler packet suggests.
  4. Empty the kettle mixture and rinse before use.
Note: You can leave the kettle’s filter in to descale it at the same time.

To clean the inside of a kettle, you can either use a solution of vinegar and water, or a dedicated descaler, depending on what you want to achieve. Your kettle should be washed every few weeks to prevent the build up of limescale.

Here’s how to wash a kettle with vinegar:

  1. Mix equal parts water and vinegar.
  2. Add to your kettle, until around around half way full.
  3. Boil the kettle once.
  4. Leave the hot water and vinegar mix for 20 mins and rinse.

A kettle uses 2200W of electricity when brought to the boil. Your kettle should have a label which shows you the total power it uses.

A coffee kettle is worth it as you have total control over the amount of water you pour, which is essential for good pour over coffee. Coffee kettles allow the flexibility and control you need to make great pour over.

Here’s how to use a coffee kettle:

  1. Add water to the kettle.
  2. If using a stovetop kettle, place on heat.
  3. For electric kettles, turn on and select the right temperature.
  4. Once at the right heat, pour slowly over your coffee and filter.
