The uncompromising quality of Victoria Arduino is perfected with their latest addition in the Eagle One Prima Home Espresso Machine. Built from the same standards as their commercial machinery, it unleashes loads of innovation from the frontier of Espresso brewing into the home, with an exciting and all new espresso brewing experience.

Successful Innovation in Sustainability

The E1 Prima introduces the NEO system (New Engine Optimisation) to the main component of the machine, its water heating boilers. Thanks to this technology, the water is heated very quickly, under 8 minutes from cold, guaranteeing a high performance and stable brewing temperatures, while increasing energy efficiency. The stainless steel boilers, even though smaller in volume, are thermally insulated to avoid heat and energy dispersion. Saving you in energy consumption.

Pulling Shots With The E1 Prima

Using standard sized commercial portafilters and filter baskets, and utilising volumetric brewing programs assures the optimal ratios for the tastiest espressos. The Ghost display, nestled on the ideal angle to the barista, offers three simple, uncomplicated  brew buttons with a shot timer that vibrantly lights up clearly in the LED display during a shot and simply fades away when not in use.

Steaming Milk on the E1 Prima

Prima’s Steam-by-Wire is an electronic lever mechanism to dispense steam, and unlike the older style manual taps, has a significant control over dispensing steam with a pressure up to 2.5 bar with elevated power/speed ratio achieved. The Prima guarantees high-quality dry and saturated steam production. Cool-touch Steam Wands round out the perfect mix of performance with reliability.

Another one week after review -

The purchase of this machine was kicked off following the refurbishment of our 27 year old kitchen as I decided not to replace major appliances as they w ere all <7 years old and still functioning perfectly. However, my fully plumbed la Cimbali coffee machine (M21 Junior) was 19 years old and developing a number of issues, so rather than spend money on repairs settled on getting a new coffee machine instead. The decision to buy was firmed up as soon as the new stone bench tops went in - how could I possibly put an old coffee machine on those amazing tops. I consulted my local coffee guru who sent me half a dozen links and after reading a few reviews settled on the Eagle One. The 37kg machine arrived on a small wooden pallet and was covered by a plastic sheet and a very sturdy double layered cardboard box, all plastic strapped to the pallet, but the machine was not tied down onto the pallet and this might have lead to the small patch of faint scratches that appeared on one spot of the otherwise very shiny outer case of the machine. Two of the leg screw holes were also slightly bent but I was easily able to straighten these by using a long M10 bolt ******* into the hole and tweaking it with my hands. Not really what I would expect for such an expensive machine but it was much less painful than sending it back. AB also gave me a small discount for my troubles with this - thanks. The rest of the machine appeared flawless and unlike as reported in another review where the the drip tray cover rattled, although mine rocked very slightly mine doesn’t rattle during extraction. After wrestling with the oddly translated manual we quickly extracted a shot, which was close to perfect so very little subsequent adjustment was needed. Setting up was straight forward after we got around the confusion in that we thought the machine arrived in plumbed mode but it turned out to already be in “Tank Mode” and the manual even stated that. The manual shows how to switch the machine from "tank" to "plumbed mode" but not how to go back again, well, I could not find out how to do this. I'm still sorting out my water filtration system for this machine but I was able to quickly plumb in the drain which was relatively straight forward with the excellent fittings provided. I also connected up the in-feed water line but am running in tank mode till the filters are sorted. One of the photos shows the underside of the machine and the plumbed in lines are reasonably tidy enough which is often not the case with plumbed in machines. I have only played around a little with the App so am not in a position to really be able to comment on this in any detail. I suspect there are endless hours of fun to be had with it and subsequent upgrades. Things I really like 1) Automatic purging of the group head after removing the portafilter. you get about 2 seconds before it starts purging so don't dawdle when removing the PF 2) the paddle switched for hot water dispensing and steam wand are great. 3) Minimalist display - I didn't want a display that stood out too much. 4) Aesthetic lines, - although it's a box shape there are enough sloped/angled/curved sides to make it look different and interesting 5) Quality of the finish. 6) Quiet, even quieter than my rotary plumbed la Cimbali where the pump was hidden under the sink. I wonder if this is helped by the significant insulation although I expect this would not be happening around the pump. 7) cool temperature wise exterior. The machine is very safe to touch pretty well everywhere, including the double walled steam wand which makes it safer than many other machines, 8) Ultimately it's about the coffee which is what I expected it would be. 9) The machine is dead easy to use compared to the rest of the coffee making process which is really handy when entertaining large group Things I don't like 1) Small Tank and drip tray. Although I will eventually fully plumb it in, these could be issues for people who cannot plumb their machines. The drip tray is VERY shallow and extracting and carrying a full tray is fraught with the the likelyhood of significant spills. The reason they keep the drip tray so shallow is to facilitate the draining/ plumbing. Maybe two drip trays could be supplied with one being deeper for non-plumbed situations. 2) The English section of the manual takes a little getting used to so luckily I can read Italian. This would easily fixed by getting a native English speaker to edit the text. 3) The warming tray could be a little warmer. I suspect this has something to do with the use of very efficient insulation to save on energy which I think is more important in the long run. The cut out E1 symbol slots on the warming tray looks a little less professional that the rest of the machine. I'm working on 3D printing some open weave black plastic tiles/grill to cover these but with enough openings in them to let the heat through.

Eagle One - First Weeks Impressions

I've had my replacement Eagle One for nearly a week and it is producing amazing coffee. Given the price of the Eagle One, to have a machine replaced before having it even plugged in was disappointing to say the least. Amy from the Orders section of Alternative Brewing was super helpful via email, with very quick responses and she organized Victoria Arduino Australia to contact me within 10 minutes of me reporting the issues with the first machine. A huge shout out to Amy for not just her help but also the positive and funny responses to my emails. There is a reason why I keep ordering from Alternative Brewing and Amy’s service personifies that. Victoria Arduino Australia were also fantastic to deal with and they were regularly in contact with me to keep me up to date with the replacement machine. Highly recommend their service too. Even though the Eagle One has a hefty price and the blurb about them starts with "Uncompromising quality", my machine still has some traditional "Italian" build characteristics. Wiping the drip tray to remove water drops usually requires the drip tray to be properly pushed in again. It is super easy to knock out of alignment. Also, the drip tray cover is gorgeous but doesn't sit flat. It rocks from front left to back right and makes a little clunk each time it moves with a glass/cup on it and it sometimes vibrates when making coffee. Neither characteristic is overly annoying but they do constantly remind me that this machine was built in the country where they struggle to get their towers straight. The volumetric controls on the Eagle One are easy to set up in the app and are super accurate. Having the app to control various functions on the machine is so much easier than pressing multiple buttons for various times to program the machine. The cloud recipes were also a great help to dial in my coffee doses when first using the machine. My only real issue with the app is that it has to manually connect to the machine each time it is activated, it doesn't remember the previous connection. Hopefully this is something that can be improved on with future app updates. The steam-by-wire feature is very easy to use, specially compared to the twisty knob on the commercial ECM we use at work. A quick purge of the wand and then a flick of the lever to get milk steamed and frothed in hardly any time at all. A small jug of milk for a couple of piccolo lattes literally took 10 seconds. Things haven't happened that quickly since I was a teenager! The cool touch steam wand is very easy to clean and also very easy to burn yourself with if you do dumb things with the final purge. Cold water helped a lot though. The espresso shots from the Eagle One are just fantastic. With my old machine, most coffees were milk based but the Eagle One has me pulling more espresso's than ever. And they are the shots that look like something from a professional's YouTube video and have your mouth watering while they are running. One concerning issue that I have with the Eagle One is that there doesn't seem to be an automatic shut off when the water runs low in the tank. (Well at least not that I could find in the app.) You can probably guess how I found that out. Unfortunately the wife won't let me drill a hole in the bench top so keeping an eye on the water levels is a constant thing now as the tank goes down surprisingly quickly. Another issue I have found is snagging the lever for the hot water pretty regularly while reaching for a cup on top of the machine or just wiping the top of the machine while it is on. The first time was a total surprise but it’s something I'm getting used to. The only reason why I mention it is that without having the machine plumbed in, I constantly try to avoid anything that goes into the drip tray as it doesn’t hold a lot of water and needs emptying frequently. Overall though it has taken 6 days to go from something that I regretted ordering to something that I can't wait to use as many times a day as possible. Sure it has its quirks, but OMG, that espresso!!
